The Temple of the Mesoamerican Past:

National Museum of Anthropology

The National Museum of Anthropology is the most visited museum in Latin America. It was inaugurated on September 17, 1964 by President Adolfo Lopez Mateos as a gift to the people of Mexico in order to preserve the most important, valuable and representative pieces of pre-Hispanic art in our country. It is one of the main tourist sites in Mexico and is undoubtedly a must for those visiting the country for the first time.

Its 22 permanent exhibition halls are visited by more than 2 million people a year. However, the collection is so large that the visitor quickly feels overwhelmed among so many rooms, showcases, pieces and information sheets.

Let’s get to know the most representative pieces housed in this important cultural venue, as well as to learn about the development of Mesoamerican cultures from the times of the olmecs to the post-classic Mayan cities and the splendor of the mexicas. We will enjoy understanding the history and  symbolism of pieces such as the Stone of the Sun, Coatlicue, the mask of Pakal or the atlante of Tula. During a four hour tour we will discover myths, the history of Mexican archaeology, and events that marked the historical evolution of these lands until the European irruption. A must for lovers of archaeology, history and Mesoamerican art.

We will visit:

  • Stone of the Tecomates
